The Viksit Bharat – Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) [VB-G RAM G] Act, 2025 has come into force across rural India from July 1, 2026, replacing the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), 2005. The new legislation increases the statutory wage employment guarantee from 100 days to 125 days for every eligible rural household. The Government has also completed administrative, financial and technical preparations for its nationwide implementation, with the national launch scheduled for July 2, 2026, in Andhra Pradesh.

VB-G RAM G Act Comes into Effect Across Rural India

The Viksit Bharat – Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) [VB-G RAM G] Act, 2025 has come into force across rural India with effect from July 1, 2026, replacing the two-decade-old MGNREGA, 2005. The Act enhances the statutory wage employment guarantee from 100 days to 125 days in every financial year for every eligible rural household.

According to the Rural Development Ministry, the new framework has been introduced to strengthen rural employment, livelihood security and sustainable village development while contributing to the vision of Viksit Bharat @2047.

Government Completes Nationwide Preparations

Ahead of the implementation, the Government stated that all administrative, financial and technical preparations have been completed in coordination with the States and Union Territories to ensure a seamless nationwide rollout.

An interim allocation of ₹95,692.31 crore has been made available to States and Union Territories for uninterrupted implementation, timely wage payments and a smooth transition to the new framework from the very first day.

The Government also stated that ongoing works will continue without interruption. Existing e-KYC verified job cards will remain valid until the issuance of the new Gramin Rozgar Guarantee Cards, ensuring uninterrupted access to employment and timely payment of wages.

Shivraj Singh Chouhan Highlights Government’s Priority

On the eve of the nationwide rollout, Union Minister for Rural Development and Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare Shivraj Singh Chouhan said that no eligible rural worker should remain without work even for a single day.

He said the Centre and the States have worked together to complete all preparations for implementing the Act. According to the Minister, adequate financial resources have been made available, implementation systems are fully in place and ongoing works will continue without interruption.

He further said that the enhanced guarantee of 125 days of wage employment will strengthen rural livelihoods, create durable community assets and accelerate the vision of Viksit Bharat.

Focus Areas of the New Framework

The Act places Gram Panchayats at the centre of rural transformation and focuses on several key areas, including:

  • Durable asset creation
  • Natural resource management
  • Water conservation
  • Agriculture and allied activities
  • Rural infrastructure
  • Women’s empowerment through Self Help Groups
  • Convergence with flagship rural development programmes
  • Technology-enabled transparent governance

The Government said the framework aims to strengthen village economies, generate sustainable livelihoods and improve the quality of life in rural India through participatory planning and effective implementation.

The Act also places emphasis on timely, transparent and accountable wage payments. It provides for an unemployment allowance if work is not provided within the stipulated time.

National Launch Scheduled in Andhra Pradesh

The national launch of the VB-G RAM G Act, 2025 will be held on July 2, 2026, at Mukkavaripalli Village in Obulavaripalle Mandal of Tirupati district, Andhra Pradesh.

The Mission will be formally launched by Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan. The programme will be attended by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, Deputy Chief Minister Konidala Pawan Kalyan, Union Ministers of State Dr. Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani and Kamlesh Paswan, along with other dignitaries.

During the programme, Gramin Rozgar Guarantee Cards will be distributed to beneficiary households. An awareness film on the Mission will be screened, and a Compendium of Op-Ed Articles on the Mission will also be released.

States Ready for Implementation

The Government said the implementation of the VB-G RAM G Act marks an important step in India’s rural development journey. During the recently concluded Rashtriya Gramin Vikas Sammelan (RGVS), Rural Development Ministers from all States informed the Union Rural Development Minister about their readiness to operationalise the Act from July 1, 2026.

According to the information shared, 29 States and Union Territories have made budgetary provisions, while 24 States have already notified the VB-G RAM G State Scheme, supporting the nationwide rollout of the new employment guarantee framework.
