Form 3AF containing particulars of expenditure specified under Section 35D(2)(a) is also required to be furnished where applicable.

Revised Return Window Extended

The filing calendar also provides a longer period for revising returns.

A revised return can now be filed until March 31, 2027. The extended timeline allows taxpayers additional time to correct reporting errors, mismatches or missed claims after filing.

Belated returns may be filed until December 31, 2026.

According to the filing provisions, a belated return attracts a late fee under Section 234F of ₹5,000, or ₹1,000 where total income is below ₹5 lakh, along with interest on unpaid tax wherever applicable.

The filing schedule also notes that filing after the prescribed due date results in the taxpayer being moved to the new tax regime by default and the loss of the ability to carry forward certain losses.

Filing Season Under the Existing Income-tax Act

Assessment Year 2026-27 is the last filing season under the Income-tax Act, 1961. The new Income-tax Act, 2025 took effect from April 1, 2026 and will govern future returns, while the forms used for the current filing season continue under the existing framework.

Taxpayers are advised to reconcile Form 16 with Form 26AS and AIS, compare both tax regimes before filing and complete e-verification within 30 days after submission.

What the July Filing Calendar Means for Taxpayers

The July 2026 compliance calendar brings together ITR filing, TDS obligations, statutory certificates, quarterly statements and prescribed forms within a structured filing schedule. Taxpayers covered under different ITR categories are required to follow their respective due dates while ensuring that all applicable forms and compliance requirements are completed within the prescribed timelines.
